National Quality Standards Assessment & Ratings
The National Quality Standard (NQS) upheld by the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority, promotes continuous quality improvement.
Children's education and care services covered under the Education and Care Services National Law are assessed and rated against the NQS. The process reflects a uniform approach to assessment and reporting across the range of service settings. The relevant regulatory authority in each state and territory undertakes the assessment and rating process.

Burch Memorial - EXCEEDING The National Quality Standard
In March 2020, the Department of Education (DE) visited Burch Memorial Preschool to undertake an assessment and rating of our service against the National Quality Standard (NQS). The National Quality Standard (NQS) is a key aspect of the National Quality Framework, which provides a national approach to regulation, assessment and quality improvement for early childhood education and care and outside school hours care services across Australia. For families, this means greater individual care for children, and better support for children’s learning and development. The NQS sets a high national benchmark and consists of seven quality areas, each containing standards and elements, that children’s education and care services are assessed and rated against.
The seven quality areas covered by the NQS are:
- Educational program and practice
- Children’s health and safety
- Physical environment
- Staffing arrangements
- Relationships with children
- Collaborative partnerships with families and communities
- Governance and leadership
There are five rating levels within the national quality rating and assessment process:
- Excellent rating – awarded by ACECQA
- Exceeding National Quality Standard
- Meeting National Quality Standard
- Working Towards National Quality Standard
- Significant Improvement Required
We are so thrilled to announce that Burch has received an outcome of EXCEEDING the National Standard in ALL SEVEN quality areas!
Not only that... Burch achieved an EXCEEDING rating in ALL FORTY of the individual standards and elements!
The feedback throughout the report is highly complimentary of Burch’s educators, practices and governance. Here is one extract from the report, highlighting interactions within the classroom: “The interactions between educators, children and their families were observed to be consistently respectful, calm and supportive. Children were seeking out the support and physical affection of educators when settling into their programs and demonstrated their familiarity with educators, other children within the program and the expectations of them at the service. Children were observed as calm and cooperative and included in decisions within the program and their chosen experiences. Children's choices and voices were observed to be consistently considered, respected and valued at the service and contributed to the curriculum.”
This is an incredible result and a prodigious achievement for our kinder. We have an exceptional team of professional, dedicated, amazing educators who go over and above to provide the best possible program for our children. This outcome validates this sentiment, and highlights our educators as leaders in their field.
This is the second time in a row Burch has achieved this result, having been rated as ‘Exceeding’ overall back in 2014, with an exceeding rating in 6 of the 7 quality areas. To not only achieve this rating again, but improve on it, shows the resolve of our educators to continually work towards elevating our service and the experiences for all of our children.
We are so proud of our staffing group, and the committee members past and present, for the hard work and commitment to our kinder that facilitated this result. Thank you.
